New signage at Stratford Rec Ground to help protect the swans  

There's some new signage on Stratford Recreation Ground, next to the river in Stratford-upon-Avon.  

Stratford District Councillor Cllr Jenny Fradgley (Guildhall), together with the District Council's Environmental Protection Technician Phil Rafferty, has devised the new signs to help protect the local swan community.  

Dog walkers are being reminded of responsible dog ownership by keeping their dogs under control so as not to chase or upset the swans.  

Phil Rafferty, Environmental Protection Technician, says: "We have received a number of complaints in the past about dogs upsetting the swans especially during nesting season and when the swans are protecting their young.  We are not asking all dog owners to keep their dogs on a lead but asking people to be responsible.  Dog owners will know if their dog is likely to chase the swans or not come back when called.  It is these owners that we are asking to keep their dogs under close control and preferably on a lead if they can't guarantee their dog's behaviour."  

Cllr Jenny Fradgley says: "We have had swans killed by dogs in the past, which has been very upsetting for every one including the dog owners. Particular danger is when swans are on the grass at some distance from the river."  

Cllr Peter Richards, Health, Wellbeing and Housing Portfolio, says: "This is a great initiative and helps to support the District Council's role in promoting responsible dog ownership."
