Council Tax level for Stratford District

Stratford-on-Avon District Councillors have set the district element of the Council Tax at a meeting of the Council on Monday 27 February.

The amount residents will be asked to pay for a Band D property is £159.12, an increase of £5. This is an increase of 3.2%

This means that all the services provided by the District Council cost £3.06 a week for a Band D household. This contributes to meeting the cost of providing a wide range of services including recycling and waste collection, planning, street cleaning, housing, housing benefits, leisure services and children's play areas.

The Council Tax from Stratford-on-Avon District Council for residents for 2023/24 for each of the valuation bands is:

Although the District Council acts as the collecting agent for Council Tax, it only receives 7.4% of the Council Tax paid by residents. Warwickshire County Council receives the lion's share of 76.6%, the Police 12.8% and Towns/Parishes 3.2%.

This means the District Council only retains 7.4p of every £1 paid in Council Tax to provide its range of services.

Cllr Trevor Harvey, Portfolio Holder for Resources, said: "The Council has approved a budget that both maintains all current provision of services, in itself an achievement given the rising costs involved, and builds on our current range of services that we provide.

"Sound and prudent financial management has meant that we are well placed to offer essential support to some of those hardest hit by the cost of living increases.  We are giving support and advice where most needed to lessen the impact of energy price rises. Money has been set aside to safeguard the Council's finances as we move into the lifespan of the medium-term financial strategy so that we can deliver on our priorities. 

"The budget has been out to consultation with the public, with businesses and reviewed by the Overview and Scrutiny Committee.  The Cabinet believes this budget meets the needs of our residents. I am determined that the huge amount of work that has gone into its preparation will best meet the needs and aspirations of those who live and work in the District."

Cllr Tony Jefferson, Leader of Stratford-on-Avon District Council, said: "This budget has been built around the principles of the Council Plan which, in turn, has our residents' views and aspirations at its heart.  In supporting those hit hardest by the cost of living, we are putting our communities at the centre of our thinking, as we said we would.

"But it also has flexibility built into its financial planning to aid economic growth and to enhance the District as a place.  So, we go into the next year with the knowledge that, even though we are having to respond to an emergency that we could not have foreseen, we have the resources to enable us to stick to our plan."
