D-Day 80th Anniversary 1944-2024

Stratford-upon-Avon will formally mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings on Thursday 6 June, with an Act of Commemoration in the Garden of Remembrance, led by the vicar of Holy Trinity Church, Revd. Patrick Taylor. The evening will incorporate the lighting of the Stratford-upon-Avon gas beacon.  

The Beacon will be one of hundreds being lit across the UK and the Commonwealth, following the lighting of the principal beacon at the naval base in Portsmouth, the departure point from which many of the boats sailed in June 1944.  

In 1944, Allied forces mounted the largest amphibious invasion the world had ever witnessed; Operation Overlord, D-Day, saw over 5,000 ships and landing craft set down more than 150,000 troops on five Normandy beaches in an action that would bring about the liberation of north-west Europe from Nazi occupation.  

It is anticipated that people will begin to start gathering at the Garden of Remembrance from 8:45pm onwards - all are welcome.
