Spring has sprung and green bins are starting to be filled with garden and food waste. Residents are reminded that they can fill their bins with grass cuttings, hedge cuttings, twigs branches and small logs (maximum 10cm diameter), plants flowers, leaves and food waste.
However, some residents are putting large amounts of soil in their bin making them heavy, potentially uncollectable and creating a health and safety issue for collection crews.
Soil is already at the end of the composting process so is not a material that benefits by going through the composting collection service. Alternatively, Warwickshire County Council will accept a very small amount of soil at their household waste recycling centres.
Tony Perks, Head of Technical and Community Services says: “Easter is here and gardening projects will be undertaken. This is just a gentle reminder to residents that with large amounts of soil their bins may not be emptied if they are too heavy."
Easter also generates large amounts of packaging material from Easter eggs and residents are reminded that the cardboard, plastic insert and foil from Easter eggs can all go in the blue lidded bin.
