The public are being asked their views on proposals that could have a big effect on affordable housing in south Warwickshire. Stratford-on-Avon District Council has drawn up draft supplementary planning guidance (SPG) on the type of new affordable housing that should be provided. The SPG will look at how to integrate the proposals into housing sites, particularly when implementing new polices in the local plan.
A six week consultation period starts on 13 June and the aim is to adopt the new guidelines in December. Anyone wishing to comment on the proposals can view a copy of the draft SPG at the district council's main offices in Stratford, or at its area offices in Alcester, Shipston, and Southam.
Among the proposals are increasing the proportion of affordable housing on new developments from 30% to 40%, as well as looking the possibility of allocating sites for 100% affordable housing. The draft SPG will also provide a clear definition of what constitutes affordable housing.
"Affordable housing in one of the council's key priorities this year and I welcome views on our proposals on what measures we are taking on the planning side," said Cllr Stuart Beese, portfolio holder for planning.
"We want to enhance the sustainability of all new housing by promoting the development of balanced communities, particularly through the provision of more affordable homes.
"The public's views are vital and a final version of the SPG will be prepared taking into account any comments made and it may also need to be revised to reflect latest information.
"Once adopted, this SPG may be material to decisions on individual planning applications."
The SPG will provide a source of published guidance and advice and is likely to be of particular interest to: prospective developers and their agents (especially before applying for planning permission), the council's partner housing associations, local residents, community organisations, parish and town councils, and landowners.
