Planning consultants have drawn up draft guidelines for developments in residential areas in Stratford-upon-Avon, following concern over new houses being built in so-called 'back land' plots - gardens. Stratford-on-Avon District Council appointed specialists from the University of Central England in January to identify significant features and characteristics of the built environment in Bridgetown, Shottery, Welcombe and Clopton, and the frontage of Evesham and Alcester Roads.
The draft guidelines are now being offered for public consultation before they are considered for adoption as Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG). Comments on the recommendations are invited from local residents and interested parties by 10 June. The guidelines recommend significant extension to the town conservation area along Avenue Road and Tiddington Road, and a modest extension to the Shottery Conservation Area.
In addition, design guidance is also provided for the eight areas covered by the study at Alcester Road, Avenue Road, Banbury Road, Clopton Road, Evesham Road (inc. Shottery), Loxley Road, Shipston Road, and Tiddington Road. All residents in each of these areas have been sent a summary leaflet of the main findings for their area, with full copies of the report available for inspection at Elizabeth House and in the library in Henley Street.
Copies of the summary leaflets for each area and the full report are also available on the Conservation and Landscape section of the website -
During the course of the consultation period an exhibition will also be on display in reception at Elizabeth House.
