National Tree Week takes place in south Warwickshire next week and more volunteers are needed to become Tree Wardens. Stratford Tree Warden Scheme, which is supported by Stratford-on-Avon District Council, is holding a number of events next week to highlight the importance of trees, along with an official planting to mark National Tree Week.

Cllr Trevor Russel, Deputy Leader of the District Council, and John Stokes, the Director of Community Projects at the Tree Council, will be planting an oak tree for National Tree Week in the Clopton Park near the Welcombe Hills Nature Reserve.

The Tree Warden Scheme is a national initiative to enable people to play an active role in conserving and enhancing their local trees and woods. The scheme is run by the Tree Council in partnership with National Grid. Since the scheme's launch in September 1990, the Tree Council has been working closely with local councils to set up tree warden networks throughout the country.

National Tree Week is the Tree Council's festival to mark the start of the tree planting season, and a nationwide celebration of trees and woods. Across the country there will be lots of opportunities to plant trees, or to take part in events, walks, talks, songs, story-telling and tree dressing.

District Council Chairman Cllr Tony Dixon and Stratford Mayor Bill Lowe will also be planting 200 trees in Stratford town to commemorate the 200 years since Trafalgar.
