A new scheme has been launched in south Warwickshire to help people on low incomes obtain privately rented accommodation. The Rent Express Scheme, which is run by Stratford-on-Avon District Council, provides cash deposits and rent-in-advance payments on behalf of tenants to landlords who are registered with the scheme.

"The District Council understands that people often find it difficult to get private tenancies," said Cllr Gillian Roache, the District Council's Portfolio Holder for Revenues and Housing.

"Landlords usually require up-front payments of a month's rent in advance, along with a deposit against damage. With this scheme the Council's Housing Advice Team can provide cash deposits as well as rent-in-advance payments. The Scheme can also be offered as a housing option to those who approach the Council for housing assistance.

"The scheme is free to use and because it is not time-limited, both the deposit and rent-in- advance payments will last for the length of the tenancy. The Council will also act as guarantor for tenants using the scheme."

In order to qualify for the Rent Express Scheme, prospective tenants need to be eligible to be on the Council's Housing Waiting List and for full housing benefit.

Tenants who are interested in using the Rent Express Scheme should contact the Housing Advice Team at Stratford District Council on 01789 260844/5/6 for further information.

Any landlords or letting agents who wish to register with the scheme should contact Nick Cadd on 01789 260849 for further information.
