Didn't we all do Well

Work started this week to restore a medieval well to its former glory following successful team work between Stratford-on-Avon District Council and local residents.  

Even before the new store of Superdrug, a national Health and Beauty retailer, had opened their new premises at 10/11 High Street, Stratford-upon-Avon, the Stratford Society and the public were quick to point out to the District Council that the medieval well in this Grade II Listed building had disappeared.  

The District Council had received no applications, or requests for consent, and was unaware of the pending refit.  

On the opening day of the new store a Planning Enforcement Officer was able to view the work done and was relieved to be told that the well had not been filled in but had been capped to protect it.  

Mr Sean Watrett, Superdrug's Regional General Manager, was reminded of the protection afforded to Listed Buildings and the matter of restoring the well to its former glory was immediately put in hand. Applications to regularise other breaches were also received within the next few days.  

If you carry out work to a listed building without first obtaining consent, the penalties are heavy; an offender is liable to three months imprisonment, or a fine of £2,000, or both.
