Council Awarded Flood Compensation from Government

Stratford-on-Avon District Council has been awarded £600,000, one of the highest amounts awarded to the Councils worst hit areas, as compensation for the floods that hit the Midlands.  

The Government established the Flood Recovery Grant Scheme in recognition of the exceptional national scale of the floods. The funding is intended to support the work of authorities in helping those in greatest and most immediate need get back on their feet.  Stratford-on-Avon District Council is able to spend the money in line with local priorities.  A special meeting of the Council's Executive is being held on 21 August to agree a policy for distributing funding.  

"We are delighted that the Government has recognised our District as being among the worst affected by the flooding and awarding us £600,000 compensation," says Les Topham, Leader of Stratford-on-Avon District Council.  

"Our officers and partners reacted quickly and effectively to ensure people were safe and tried to limit damage to property. Work is still on-going and we realise it will take a long time before everything is back to normal. We hope to use this money to benefit both residents and businesses to get back up and running as quickly as possible where feasible."
