Stratford-on-Avon District Council and partners' commitment to Fairtrade has paid off, with the recent award the town received for "Fairtrade Town" status.

Stratford-on-Avon District Council's Executive passed a resolution in October 2006 to provide Fairtrade refreshments to staff, members and visitors wherever possible, thus fulfilling one of the criteria necessary to enable the Town to achieve its Fairtrade status.

The Town Hall will play host to the formal presentation of the certificates at the Town Hall on Saturday 22 September at 10.30am. The Chairman of Stratford District Council, Councillor Stuart Beese, and the Mayor of Stratford-upon-Avon Town Council, Councillor Donna Barker, will receive their certificates from Stratford Fairtrade Town Steering Group Chairman, Chris Spriggs. Visitors to the event will have the opportunity to sample Fairtrade refreshments.  There will be an Oxfam stall as well as a selection of Traidcraft goods and FairPlay toys. The event is supported by many of the shops and cafes in the town who also support Fairtrade.

"Stratford-on-Avon District Council is thrilled with the part it has played in the push towards Fairtrade Town status. I hope this award will demonstrate how easy it is, as consumers, to make small changes in our lives. This in turn will make profound changes for the better on the lives of people living in less economically developed countries." Says Councillor Stuart Beese.
