Stratford-on-Avon District Council's Heartbeat Award Scheme goes up a gear this week with the presentation of an award to a Bed and Breakfast.

Heron Lodge is currently the first Bed and Breakfast establishment in the District to achieve the Award.

The Heartbeat Awards, a national scheme that has been running in the District for 12 years, have been given each year to catering establishments that provide healthy eating options for their customers and good hygiene standards. Heron Lodge makes the 20th award to be presented to date in the District

"The presentation of a Heartbeat Award to a Bed and Breakfast in the Stratford-on-Avon District is a real feat in helping the community become aware of the importance of being healthy. Stratford-on-Avon District Council's participation in these Awards is just one way that the Council can encourage more establishments to help create and maintain healthier communities" says Cllr Chris Williams, Community Portfolio Holder.

"Having experienced two strokes myself, I know the impact of tackling this and the Award demonstrates the District Council's commitment to dealing with both coronary heart disease and strokes.  Obesity is also of concern, especially as it is now a national problem. Latest figures from the West Midlands Public Health Observatory indicate that 1 in 5 in the Stratford District is obese."
