Stratford-on-Avon District Council has successfully compulsorily purchased the former Island Café, No. 44 Guild Street, Stratford-upon-Avon.

Since ceasing trading in 1996, the former Island Café has deteriorated and the District Council has moved to improve the vista of one of the most prominent approach roads into this historic town.

The District Council's pursuit of serving a Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) on the property was mounted only after unsatisfactory negotiations with the former owner, Mr. Jedynak.

The Secretary of State upheld the CPO, and informed the District Council of its support in March 2007.

"There has been mounting public support for the improvement of the former Island Café, which in recent years has become an eyesore for visitors and residents alike," says Councillor Lynda Organ, Resources Portfolio Holder.

"The successful Compulsory Purchase Order has meant that the District Council can seek a future use of the building that will safeguard this sensitive site, enhancing neighbouring properties and businesses, and the entrance route to the town."
