Stratford-on-Avon District Council's refuse & recycling service is changing - from Monday 4 August the new service is a wheeled bin collection which will now include cardboard, plastic bottles and a weekly collection of kitchen waste.
As part of the preparation for this new service over 100,000 new wheeled bins are being delivered to households. This has been a huge logistical operation, however, due to a delay in manufacturing some of the new wheeled bins will not be delivered in time for the start of the new contract in August.
"I am sorry to say that unfortunately some 7,000 households in the east of the District will not receive their new wheeled bins for the start of the contract in August. It is a supply chain problem and we have been let down by a sub-contractor," says Councillor Simon Jackson, Environment Portfolio.
"This is not just a local or national problem; there is a worldwide shortage of wheeled bins. However I would like to reassure residents that operationally there should be no diminution in services and those residents affected should continue to use their black sacks on their new collection day and can still put out cardboard, plastic bottles and cartons for recycling using their current black box or another additional container.
"We are continuing to communicate with residents and are writing directly to each of those households that is affected and all District residents will receive a copy of the Council's magazine Your Review that has a complete guide to the new service as well as the new collection calendar.
"Our main supplier has assured us that they will meet any additional costs that may be encountered and are currently seeking legal action against the sub-contractors. By August almost 90% of the new wheeled bins will have been delivered, with the remaining 14,000 bins arriving at the end of August."
Residents have enough black sacks to use until October and those that won't receive the new wheeled bins in time for the start of the new service are asked to still put out their waste in sacks and boxes as now but on the new collection day. And will still be able to receive the extended recycling service that includes the new recyclable materials of cardboard and plastic bottles in the existing recycling box, until the new wheeled bins are delivered.
With the support of residents this new and improved service, being carried out by Verdant, aims to decrease the District's waste, increase recycling and provide better value for money.
From August 2008 to April 2009 the new service will be:
