Stratford-on-Avon District Council's Dog Warden is advising dog owners to ensure that their dogs are wearing identification tags, in a bid to reduce the number of dogs picked-up as strays that are taken to the kennels each year.

It is a legal requirement for dogs in public places to wear a collar and tag bearing the name and address of the owner.  A high percentage of dogs picked up as strays are not wearing any identification, which means they are taken to kennels and may be re-homed after 7 days.  It also means that if the owner subsequently contacts the Council to report their dog as missing, they have to reimburse the Council for the costs of collecting, transporting and kennelling the dog, plus a fine, prior to collecting their dog from the kennels.

Even if your dog is micro-chipped, if it also wears a conventional identification tag it will help to re-unite stray dogs with their owners more quickly and easily.  For the small price of an identity tag, much of the cost, anxiety and heartache created by a dog being separated from its owner can be avoided.

The District Council has teamed-up with a number of local businesses to offer a discount between now and the end of February 2011 on the cost of an engraved identity tag.

Jollyes on the Maybird Centre in Stratford-upon-Avon are offering a 10% discount on the cost of a new identity tag for your dog and Timpson are offering a 15% discount at their stores in Stratford, Leamington, Daventry, Evesham and Banbury.  Take this cutting from the newspaper to be eligible for the discount.

Stratford-on-Avon District Council collects around 150 stray dogs each year.
