Events and festivals help to promote the vitality of the local economy and Stratford-on-Avon District Council recently invited event organisers to apply for funding to help support a local event or festival taking place in their area before 1 October 2011.

The sixteen successful applicants had to demonstrate that their event would help to promote local products, businesses and services, increase visitor numbers to the local area and help to develop the profile of local area as a premier visitor destination.

Councillor Mike Brain, Community Services Portfolio says:“I am delighted that through the small amount of funding available, we have been able to support a wide range of events across the district.

The Shipston Victorian Evening held in December was opened by local actor and Harry Potter star, David Bradley and several local shopkeepers reported excellent trading and enjoyed increased sales and footfall.

Promoting economic vitality in the District by funding projects supporting economic growth and recovery is crucial in the current economic climate.  Local businesses shape the character of our community and the more support local Councils can provide now, the better the prospects for businesses will be in the future."
