Contractors will start work on Monday 14th February 2011 at Stratford-on-Avon District Council's Recreation Playground to remove and replace the main play feature and sand play area.

The original equipment at the popular Recreation Ground play area is nearing the end of its useful life and has been identified in a recent health and safety audit for replacement.

The project is costing £90,000 and has been funded from Central Government's Playbuilder scheme which was re-released in October 2010.

The works are expected to finish on 18 March and some of the play area will be out of action for the whole of this 5 week period.

Councillor Mike Brain, Technical Services Portfolio says:" I'm extremely pleased that we have managed to make full use of the Playbuilder funding which has enabled us to provide new and improved play facilities.  Local families and visitors really value the play facilities at the Recreation Ground and play is so important for children's development and combating obesity and a whole number of issues as well."

Proludic Ltd supplied the winning design which incorporates a large fishing boat centrepiece with Dolphin Springer's and a drawbridge all set on a sea designed safety surface. The sand play is accessible via a ramp to the Hawaii multi play and also includes a water play feature, sand diggers and sieves.

Other Playbuilder Schemes funded in the District include:

  • £37,500 for Big Meadow Recreational Area, Bidford-on-Avon
  • £15,489 for Tollgate Road Play Area, Southam and
  • £42,500 for Conway Fields, Alcester
