The play area and sports pitches at Stratford Recreation Ground remain closed following the recent flooding in the area and officials at Stratford-on-Avon District Council are warning of the dangers associated with flood water and advising people to stay away until a full clean up operation has taken place.

Although the flooding may have subsided there is still standing water in the area and the play ground will remain closed until this has receded, after which the play equipment will be inspected by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) to ensure none of the equipment has been affected by the flood waters.

After the inspection a full clean up operation will take place this week involving jet washing and disinfection of the play equipment and the removal of the sand from the sand area.

It is anticipated that the play area will remain closed for a further 7 days while this work is completed.

The District Council would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience that this may cause but hope that people understand the reason for the closure.

Care should be taken to avoid areas saturated with flood water and also areas with visible debris as flood waters and standing waters pose various risks, including infectious diseases, chemical hazards, injuries and can contain sewage.

It is advisable to stay away from this area, but if you are using the area for activities such as dog walking, wash your hands thoroughly after visiting.

Sunlight and soil will help to destroy flood contamination and any excess risk to health will normally disappear completely within 7 days.
