Stratford-on-Avon District Council's Full Council has today, Monday 22 July, endorsed the Core Strategy document that will shape development in the District for the next 15 years.

There was a recorded vote with 45 Councillors voting for the recommendations, 1 against and 2 abstentions.

Councillor Chris Saint, leader of Stratford-on-Avon District Council says: “We've had a good debate this afternoon but I am relieved to say that Full Council has accepted the recommendations set out today to endorse the District's Core Strategy, subject to consultation."

“We have a 20 year window of opportunity to develop, but preserve and hand down the vista of our beautiful environment and heritage that makes the District what it is today.  This strategy will be the watch word for development in this District, which is not an easy task but I am satisfied that we have a solid document to help stand the challenges of developers."

Before the formal stages of the Core Strategy can be progressed, the District Council needs to carry out a period of consultation on two specific matters which have not featured in previous drafts of the plan. These are:

1.   A new settlement comprising about 4,800 dwellings in the Gaydon/Lighthorne Heath area.

2.   A Canal Quarter Regeneration Zone in Stratford-upon-Avon, together with two employment areas on the edge of town, south of Alcester Road and east of Birmingham Road.

The consultation period will commence on Thursday 1 August and run until Friday 13 September with further details to follow.
