Stratford-on-Avon District Council is joining up with Stratford Town Council, local schools and community groups to help give Stratford-upon-Avon town a spring clean.

One aspect of the spring clean will see pupils from KES raising awareness of the problem caused by chewing gum.  The pupils are carrying out a survey and marking up all the chewing gum on Henley Street in preparation for the annual chewing gum removal in the town during the first 2 weeks of April.

Cllr Lynda Organ, Technical Services Portfolio says: “Chewing gum casts an unsightly stain on our beautiful town and scraping it off our streets is also a great drain on taxpayers' money.  The aim of this project is to encourage people not to drop chewing gum and to dispose of it responsibly."

Each year the District Council carries out a 'deep clean' of Stratford-upon-Avon in preparation for the Shakespeare Birthday Celebrations and the summer visitors over a 3 week period, with contractors working through the night from 6pm to 4am.  The cost of removing chewing gum from the pavements of Stratford-upon-Avon is around £10,000.

And it's not only Stratford-upon-Avon that benefits - Alcester, Henley, Wellesbourne and Southam have also received hot washes throughout March.

For any local groups that would like to carry out their own Spring Clean the District Council has some graffiti cleaning kits and litter picking sticks that can be loaned out, free of charge, as well as providing refuse sacks and arrange for collection of rubbish and recycling after a tidy up event.
