As summer approaches and with the hope of warmer weather leading to more open windows and outdoor celebrations, sadly this is the time of year when neighbour noise complaints are likely to increase with rising noise levels.

Between March 2013 and April 2014 Stratford-on-Avon District Council dealt with almost 500 noise complaints.

This week is Noise Action Week, from 19 to 25 May and the District Council is encouraging everyone to consider the noise they make and raising awareness of the services available to help tackle the problem.

Robert Weeks, Head of Environment and Planning, said: “Excessive noise causes sleeplessness and can really ruin people's quality of life – whether it's a dog barking, banging from DIY, loud music or burglar alarms going off.  We would ask everyone to be considerate and think about the impact that their excessive noise could be having on others, not just during Noise Action Week, but all the time."

Fortunately, most people in the District are considerate of their neighbours. However, if you are having problems with noise from a neighbour quite often it can be sorted out by talking to them as they may not be aware there is a problem.

If this is unsuccessful, or you do not wish to approach your neighbour, mediation may be the answer.  It is a step-by-step process in which an impartial mediator helps. If the problem persists you should contact the District Council's Environmental Protection Team on 01789 260835.

The following advice can help reduce noise:

  • Music – keep the volume and bass as low as possible, and keep your speakers away from party walls.
  • Parties – warn your neighbours in advance if you are going to have a loud party.
  • Dogs – train your dog not to bark unnecessarily and do not leave your dog alone for long periods.
  • Burglar alarms – ensure your burglar alarm has a 20-minute cut off switch and appoint a key holder who can be contacted if the alarm goes off.  Remember, the District Council can force entry into your home to deactivate your alarm if it sounds for more than 20 minutes and you will have to pay all costs.
  • DIY – carry out all noisy DIY jobs during the day or at weekends.
