National Recycling Week aims to help raise awareness of recycling across the UK and this year it takes place from 16 to 22 June.

The theme for Recycle Week this year is 'Recycling at Home and Away'.

Stratford-on-Avon District Council is committed to reducing waste.  If all material that could be composted or recycled is put in the relevant bin, the District Council would achieve a staggering recycling figure of 77.7%, just by residents using their recycling bin or box for recyclables and their green bin, green sack or caddy for garden and food waste.  The District Council's current recycling rate is 59%

Here's a reminder of what can be put in each bin

Recycling Bin

  • Paper
  • Cardboard
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Household plastic packaging except expanded polystyrene
  • Food and drink cans
  • Clean foil
  • Cartons
  • Aerosols

PLEASE NO plastic bags, nappies or plant pots.

Green Bin

  • Garden waste including grass cuttings, small branches, plants and weeds
  • Food waste – all food including fruit and vegetables, meat and bone (including chicken carcasses), fish, dairy, tea and coffee grounds, bread and pastries

General Waste bin - Anything that cannot go in the recycling or green bin

The District Council has additional services for small electrical items, textiles and household batteries.  You can put these items out for collection in separate carrier bags for each material with any of your wheeled bin(s) collections.

Cllr Mike Brain, Technical Services Portfolio says: “Our District residents understand the recycling system offered by the District Council and our recycling rates make us one of the top recycling Councils in England. But there's no harm in reminding residents what can and can't go in each of the bins and also the rates could improve just by adjusting our habits.  Although the District Council continues to offer a weekly collection of food waste, the District Council would encourage those residents that can, to try and put the majority of their food waste in their green bin and saving the amount of waste sent to landfill."

The District Council also helps you recycle 'on the go' as there are a number of on-street recycling bins in the main settlements across the District

The following materials can be put in these bins:

  • Paper
  • Cardboard
  • Glass (bottles and jars)
  • Tins and cans
  • Plastic packaging
  • Aluminum foil
  • Cartons

Please ensure that no food waste, plastic bags or other non-recyclable materials are put in the on-street recycling bins.

Around 18 tonnes of recycling material is collected from these bins each year.
