Stratford on Avon District Council's contractor Biffa have now started providing a further improved refuse and recycling collection services with a new fleet of vehicles that are safer and greener than ever.

The new collection fleet was introduced at the same time of the collection round changes at the beginning of August.

Also as part of the overhaul, Biffa has some new street cleaning equipment being introduced across the District; including a mechanical pavement sweeper, a hot jet washer and a street barrow with suction unit.

The new fleet of 20 vehicles from vehicle manufacturers Mercedes, completely replace the previous seven year old fleet.  During their working life in Stratford District, the outgoing fleet of vehicles have covered 3,040,000 km and emptied more than 31million bins, collecting 113,000 tonnes of refuse, 97,000 tonnes of recycling and 128,000 tonnes of garden waste.

The new lorries, have been replaced at no extra cost to Stratford District Council, and are much more economic to run, delivering a more efficient service for residents. They can carry ten per cent more than the ones they replace - around 12 tonnes each and also have fuel-efficient engines and advanced health and safety functions for the security of crew.

Cllr Mike Brain, Technical Services Portfolio says: “The new refuse collection vehicles are coming into service in Stratford District as part of a planned overhaul and upgrade of the current fleet. There is no cost to the District Council but a wide range of benefits for residents.

“The new vehicles are more efficient and carry the very latest safety improvements, including cameras and traffic sensors. Greater reliability will also reduce the number of vehicle breakdowns, helping to cut down on missed bin collections."

Safety features

  • 360 Camera's fitted to improve the safety of the crews and record from the time the vehicle is started to 10 minutes after the ignition is turned off.  This also helps protect the crew against dangerous occurrences, allowing working practices to be monitored and reviewed at all times.
  • An audible warning device is activated when the vehicle is reversing

Environmental features

  • Improved miles to the gallon versus previous fleet
  • Engines can deliver greater turning power at lower revs, which means less fuel is used
  • Emissions are more environmentally friendly – reduced carbon and nitrous oxide output

Technology features
